Westlake Village Civic Association - Subdivision
The Westlake Village subdivision has a very active homeowners association dedicated to the preservation of our home values. We can boast about having one of the largest “privately owned” parks in northern Pinellas - 30 acres. Our 4 illuminated tennis courts and a nearly one mile paved walking path, in our wooded park, provide an active lifestyle for all age levels. Plus, we have a 3-acre working citrus grove ready for resident’s citrus picking and a 144,000 gallon swimming pool. Our common areas are well maintained with an underground sprinkler system and a professional lawn service. This is an exclusive residential community of single-family homes and condominium residences abundantly forested, with rolling hills located in a “non-evacuation” (hurricanes and high water) location. We are conveniently situated close to shopping (< 1 mile), Gulf beaches (< 2 miles), golf courses (< 5 miles), and Lake Tarpon (< 4 miles fresh water). Each single family home site is on at least 1/3 acre and some 3/4 acre lots. Multiple builders make this subdivision unique and varied for a pleasant curb appeal. If you crave room to breathe, to get out under the trees and do family things together, to climb hills, to ride bicycles without worrying about the traffic, to hike, to experience nature face-to-face, Westlake Village is just for people like you and your family.Westlake Village subdivision is located on the west side of Belcher Rd between Nebraska and Alderman roads. To locate our subdivision, go to an Internet mapping service and put in the address of our clubhouse, at 810 Village Way, Palm Harbor, FL 34683.

I read the Village Voice each month to see what is happening in Westlake. This month, I noticed that there is a link for "Facebook" on our main menu. I clicked on it, and "voila!" Facebook popped up, photographs and all. Much of it is back and forth between residents and board members.
However, there was a disturbing item buried several pages back in Facebook. It referenced individuals appearing at homes, soliciting or offering to work on cars, body work, etc. for a fee. Those solicitors are currently called "Traveller's" and visit Florida in the Spring making money on unsuspecting homeowners.
This is a law enforcement issue and should be reported immediately to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office (727-582-6200). Please get the best possible description of the individuals and the vehicle they drive in order to share it with deputies when they arrive at your home.
Meantime, keep your garage doors and all access doors locked. If unfamiliar faces appear at your door, soliciting, and if they make you feel at all uncomfortable, do not hesitate to call the Sheriff.
It's terrible to have to be wary of solicitors, but history proves that your "gut instinct" is your best protection for you and your family.
Meantime, I believe that this type of information needs to be regularly displayed WITHIN the monthly newsletter. Facebook is good for trivia but not for something that affects the immediate safety and welfare of the residents of Westlake.

PINELLAS COUNTY SHERIFF CANDIDATE FORUM
Posted on Sunday, March 11, 2012 @ 11:59:25 CDT (14 reads)
FORUM TO QUESTION CANDIDATES Dunedin, FL (March 5, 2012) – Acknowledging a hotly contested race for Pinellas County Sheriff, the National Armed Services & Law Enforcement Memorial Museum (NASLEMM) and VFW Post 2550 of Dunedin will co-host a non-partisan public forum for all announced candidates for sheriff on April 18, 2012 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the VFW Hall located at 360 Douglas Ave. According to NASLEMM Executive Director, Bill Douglas, candidates will respond to tough questions from voters at Pinellas County‘s largest SHERIFF CANDIDATE FORUM. Bay News 9 senior anchor, Al Ruechel, will act as moderator.
Voters are being asked to submit questions for the candidates in advance of the forum at: hsmithconsulsv@aol.com. Open to the public, seating is limited to 200. According to forum organizer, Harvey Smith, this is the first time a non-partisan candidate forum for sheriff has been held in Pinellas County. “Given the size and scope of the sheriff’s office,” said Smith, “it’s important to have voters weigh in on key issues that impact the community when shrinking budgets are challenged by crime, drug use and other law enforcement issues.” A second forum is being planned mid-summer by NASLEMM.

Post community forum as part of the Newsletter
Posted on Monday, January 23, 2012 @ 16:44:17 CST (24 reads)
Hopefully, I'm utilizing the proper method of suggesting/querying a concern. As I have no idea of the intricacies of space available for the online newsletter, this may not apply, however, I wonder if the community forum might not recieve more attention if it is included as part of the newsletter and not a seperate entity.
People read the newsletter but may not take the time to go to the community forum. I know I did not read the forum for years and see that it is seldom used. Perhaps being "inclusive" instead of "exclusive" might enhance communications.
